Tive uma excelente experiência com a professora Celisa Canto.Confesso que tenho muita dificuldade em aprender outra língua.Quando comecei com Celisa, eu ja havia feito varias outras tentativas, mas sem absolutamente nenhum sucesso.O mais interessante para mim, foi a dedicação que ela tinha comigo, mesmo vendo que tudo ia bem devagar.Eu tinha certeza que ela iria desistir de me ensinar, mas ,na verdade, acontecia o contrario, ela sempre estava muito empolgada e sempre me motivando a seguir aprendendo.Para mim, Celisa Canto é a melhor professora que ja conheci, eu a recomendo muitíssimo, sem nenhuma hesitação.

Celisa é uma professora de Português MARAVILHOSA! Passei duas semanas com ela no programa Living & Learning e estou muito feliz com o progresso que tive durante essas semanas. Todos os dias, ela estava assistindo meu progresso e mudando as aulas e o assunto que eu estava estudando para garantir que eu maximizasse meu tempo com ela. I spent two weeks with her in the Living & Learning program and I am extremely happy with the progress I made during my time with her. Throughout the class, she observed my progress closely and was continuously tailoring my skills training and the subject matter to maximize my time with her. If you are thinking of learning Portuguese, stop hesitating and send a Celisa a message now- I promise you won't regret it!

Learning Portuguese with Celisa was an incredible experience!I completed a two week intensive, in person course with her in Florianopolis. I highly recommend her as a teacher.I spent a couple of months listening to Portugese classes in audio form before travelling to Brazil. The amount I learned from Celisa in such a short time by far surpassed what I had learned previously. I quickly realised how necessary grammar and feedback are in memorising and perfecting the accent which was missing in audio form.I have had many (French) language teachers in the past and I can say that Celisas skill and experience as well as her extremely evident love for the her job puts her far above the rest.Her teaching method is very effective. It is impressive to see how fast she picks up on what lessons, games or exercises would be most beneficial to complete depending on repeated errors in homework and communication.She makes you feel so comfortable during her classes, and makes learning fun, incorporating music and even the option to study whilst taking a day trip somewhere else on the island.We also had a couple of lovely dinners together where we got to know more about each other. She is a fantastic person as well as a fantastic teacher; so open, intelligent, interesting and welcoming. I feel very lucky to have met her.If you plan to travel to Florianopolis to learn in person, you will not regret it! It is one of the most beautiful places I have been, and the spectacular, small but lively town of Lagoa Da Conceição, where Celisa lives is the perfect base. I spent the mornings with Celisa and the afternoons laying in the sun completing my homework.Studying with Celisa has made me fall in love with Portuguese as a language and I am very inspired to continue learning.Thanks for everything, Celisa!

I have been studying with Celisa in person and via Zoom for over a year now and cannot but praise her enough – as a teacher but also as a person. Celisa is very professional, with perfect command of all aspects of the Portuguese language, demanding (in a good way) and fun to work with. In some magic ways she assesses when to move on to the next topic – just when I start to be at a loss on how to express myself. I appreciate very much that she always corrects mistakes, no matter how painful (for the both of us) when the same mistake is made for the 100th time and how she encourages progress through smart repetition (be prepared to do your homework :) Celisa is full of ideas on how to make classes more intersting and how to immerse her students into daily life by giving classes on field excursions or over dinner or lunch. My experience with Celisa was terrific! She is smart, thorough, professional, dedicated, interesting, and fun! In just the one month that we worked together, she presented me with real-life opportunities to practice my Portuguese. (For example, she took me out for a night of soul, jazz, and blues with Sito Lozzi, Péricles Caputo & Antônio Colângelo ... I included a picture!) She also honed in on what I needed to work on and helped me significantly improve my knowledge of the language. I highly recommend her to anyone who wants to gain confidence and proficiency. A hundred stars!

I really enjoyed learning Portuguese wir Celisa.She is a friendly and patient teacher and knows how to encourage the student for receiving the best learning success.The lessons are individual, versatile, and face to face. Celisa motivated me to speak only Portuguese in the lessons(at least I tried it), luckily she also speaks fluently English;)Before I came to Celisa I could not speak any Portuguese word but already after 2 weeks lessons I could hold small conversations.(Of course you have to be motivated to learn the language).I totally recommend her.

Celisa is a superb mentor, teacher and guide to the Portuguese language and Brazilian culture. I’ve previously received formal education and instruction in five languages, and I can state unequivocally that her methods and dedication are on par or superior to any private or university level instruction.Celisa is a smart and experienced teacher who is also gifted with knowing several languages. She provides excellent one on one instruction and gives 100% dedication to her students, giving constant feedback and real world examples that enable students to take notes and enforce the instruction. She made herself available (outside of instruction hours) to answer any questions about the language or living in Florianópolis.Prospective students need to be ready to dedicate themselves to her instruction and nightly homework. This is the best way to fully capitalize in her course. After 10 days of instruction, I was confident to speak and listen to Portuguese speakers in and around Florianópolis.I will most certainly seek Celisa out to provide additional lessons (both in person and online). Her rates are very reasonable for one on one instruction…and she is so dedicated to her students, providing immediate assistance regarding homework, living arrangements and recommended sites to visit.I especially liked her immersion trips, where she provided the lesson by taking a boat trip and a car trip to other parts of the island. As any language student would agree, getting out of the classroom and using the language in real world environments (with the teacher close by to help with questions or thoughts) is THE BEST teaching method. After 10 days of long, challenging instruction, I am happy to consider Celisa one of my closest language mentors, friend and “sister”.

Celisa is a wonderful teacher and I consider myself very lucky to have had to the chance to study Portuguese with her. If you are truly serious about learning Portuguese and ready to work and learn a ton, then look no further. I spent four weeks in Floripa in January and originally was going to do 3 weeks with Celisa and take the fourth week off, but I enjoyed my time with her so much I added a 4th week on and decided to return in April! I have so many nice things that I could say and the others reviews echo my sentiments. I could write this in Portuguese (with errors) but I think most people looking will be English speakers.I love language learning and I have experience learning Spanish, French, German and Polish to various degrees in both group courses and with private tutors. I arrived in Floripa with a conversational Portuguese or Portunhol that consisted of a lot of Spanish words and without knowledge of a lot of grammatical concepts in Portuguese. I knew that a group course in Portuguese would probably move at a slower pace and that I would have less opportunity to speak in a group environment. Also, with limited time in Brazil, I wanted to maximize my learning. So, for these reasons, I chose to write to Celisa and she arranged a trial lesson online. I was immediately impressed with her attention to detail and how quickly she zeroed in on my mistakes and what I needed to work on. She was also warm, funny and charismatic.Celisa is a professional at the top of her game in every sense. She has been teaching for decades, has a sound methodology and knows Portuguese inside and out. There was never a question that she couldn’t answer for me. Her explanations were logical and she really knows how to teach in a way that works for each student. She is at the top of her field and even taught me a thing or two about English, my native language (i.e. decadence!). Celisa used a wonderful book as well as many different mediums. It wasn’t just learning a language, we also learned about the culture, music and history of Brazil. Celisa invited me to various musical events and naturally everything outside of the classroom was a chance to practice my Portuguese as well.Celisa is a demanding teacher and I really prefered it that way. I had a lot of home work and journal writing. She would review my writing and naturally identify weak points or knowledge gaps that would then direct the next lessons. I would never have received the same of attention or expertise in a group class. I could rest at ease knowing that I was in good hands, and if I was repetitively saying or writing something wrong that Celisa would bring it to my attention.Naturally, my Portuguese, even after the first week, improved immensely. I went from knowing present, simple future (ir + infinitive) a bit of past tense to being able to use various tenses and subjunctive. Before I knew it, I was able to write journals about my entire day, trips I had made, or even essays on aspects of Canadian history. We covered so much more material than a group class could. Despite having reached advanced levels in French and Spanish, I had never successfully finished a novel in another language. And this week I finished a 200+ page novel in Portuguese!All that to say that I had a wonderful time with Celisa. She is a gem and I am very lucky that stars aligned and I had to opportunity to learn with her. Yes, we worked hard but it was fun and the time would fly by. We managed to laugh a lot, talk about life, and I really felt at home with her even after a few days; as if I were having coffee with a dear friend.Muito obrigado, Celisa!
